Bunch of Jerks

Design Evolution Of A Logo

It is exceptionally rare that the initial concept of a logo is created just as the client had envisioned it in their mind (and by rare, I mean it hasn’t happened for me yet). Typically, I will be given an idea of what the client wants and then I will present a couple options during a face-to-face meeting with them.

In this case, my friend Cam wanted a new logo for his Men’s Slo-Pitch team; A Bunch of Jerks. He wanted to go with a retro 70’s logo and supplied the following image from the 1976 Bad News Bear movie poster as an example…

I found a groovy font online and came up with this quick concept…

He liked the look but thought it looked like it said “A Bunch of Terks”. Once he mentioned that, “Terks” was all I could see so I manually edited the font to look more like a J…

Another color changes and a few more edits to the font later we had something resembling a baseball team logo…

After seeing Concept #5, Cam thought the “k” looked like a bat hitting a ball and wondered what that would look like. So, I presented him with…

We were both pleased with the end result so he took the logo to his team mates for their approval but unfortunately they weren’t as keen on it as we were. After meeting with his team, Cam then sent me the following image and said this is the kind of “retro” they were looking for…

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!

This time instead of coming up with different options and messaging back and forth between a bunch of guys, we decided to all meet in real-time to go over what everyone wanted in a logo. So, I packed up my laptop and met the team at the pub. We found a font that everyone liked and during the course of a couple hours came up with a bunch of concepts…

14 Concepts later (from start to finish) we had a logo that the whole team agreed on…

While it’s not what I would have gone for myself, they liked it and that’s all that really matters :)
